Winter is Coming ...

Chapter One: Winter in Obertauern

Chapter One: Winter in Obertauern
Obertauern is one of those places where winter really means winter. At 1,740 metres, the snow tends to stick around quite some time.
Late November? Snow.
May? Still snow. Up to 264 cm at its peak.

Honestly, winter knows what it’s doing here. And because the mountains wrap around Obertauern like a giant bowl, you can chase the sun all day, skiing one sunny slope after another.

Obertauern is built right around the slopes, with 26 lifts and cable cars connecting the whole ski area in one big winter playground. You step out of your hotel, get on your skis, and off you go. You don't even need a shuttle bus.

From whichever point you start, you can ski your way around the entire area on the famous Tauernrunde, a perfect loop for exploring Obertauern one slope at a time.

If fresh powder is your thing, Obertauern delivers here, too. Thanks to the mountains wrapping around the area, you’ll find slopes facing pretty much every direction. You can start on the sunny side in the morning, then ski down those north-facing slopes when you’re ready for the good stuff. And if you want to take things off-piste, there’s plenty of terrain to play with for different levels.

Just don’t wing it. Local ski guides know the mountains really well and can show you where to go and how to plan your route. And, most importantly, how to stay safe.
And after all that skiing, the question of the day is: where to eat? There are over 50 huts and restaurants, so you are really never far from something delicious. Of course, you will be able to find all the classic Salzburger dishes like Kasnock’n, Frittatensuppe, Germknödel and Kaiserschmarrn.
The setting is just beautiful! Take a table, enjoy the mountain views, and let someone else cook for a while.

And here’s a little piece of Obertauern history: the Achenrainhütte on Gamsleiten has been around for almost 100 years, making it Austria’s oldest ski hut. Almost a century of schnitzel, drinks, and stories from the mountain.

For solo women and girls’ trips, Obertauern has a lot to offer. You can ski straight from your hotel; everything is easy to reach, there are plenty of places to stop for lunch or a drink, and you’re never far from other people. Basically, you can have your independent mountain-girl moment, meet people along the way, and still have plenty of space to do your own thing. 🎿😉

Hotel Enzian - A GoLeonessa Women-Trusted Hotel

This brings us to our favorite hotel in Obertauern, Hotel Enzian. This adult-only hotel combines classic Austrian charm with a little cosmopolitan attitude.

Here, it is all about skiing straight from the door, long spa sessions, amazing food, and spaces you actually want to hang out in.

Peaceful if you want peaceful. Lively if you want lively. Never taking itself too seriously. Whether you’re here with your girls or travelling solo, it just feels easy.

And then there’s Sucette. The Enzian’s beautiful, slightly bossy house cat has clearly decided that being a hotel guest is nice, but being in charge is better. She wanders through the building, making sure everything runs smoothly according to her feline standards. Her human, Sissi Veit, might officially be the owner, but we have our suspicions about who really calls the shots around here.

Speaking of Sissi, she’s a big part of what makes the Enzian feel the way it does. With her international outlook and her wonderfully mixed team from more than 20 nations, she’s created a mountain hotel that feels open-minded and very much its own thing.

After a day of skiing, your muscles are probably going to have some opinions. The 1,400 m² Recharge Spa is spread across four floors and made for exactly this moment. From November 2026, the new spa takes over with facials, body treatments, massages, scrubs and more, plus plenty of space to simply switch off. There’s a pool for a nice swim, saunas, and a seriously good gym with panoramic views over the slopes. Apparently some people like to work out after skiing. Respect. Basically, whether you want to swim, sweat, sauna, or be thoroughly pampered, you’ll find your version of relaxation here.

For your hungry stomach, the hotel offers three very different kinds of restaurants, depending on your mood. At Zirbenstube, it’s all about Austrian comfort: honest local ingredients, traditional classics in a cosy setting. Then there’s Flavors, bringing Bella Italia to Obertauern with pasta, antipasti, red wine, music and a fun amount of Dolce Vita energy. And for something completely different, head to Bōken, where Sushi Master Konstantin serves sushi and Japanese tapas right at the bar.
Three restaurants, three moods. Austria, Italy, or Tokyo - you decide.

And somewhere in all of this, Sucette is probably still making her rounds, keeping a very close eye on things. Someone has to. 🐾✨
